CHARLES MATTHEWS 

Charles Matthews nació en 1966.  Estudió en la Royal College of Music, Londrés, y fue becario de órgano en Trinity College (Universidad de Cambridge).  Entre sus profesores se destacan Beryl Tichbon, Gwilym Isaac, David Pettit, Patricia Carroll, Nicholas Danby, Charles Spinks y Richard Marlow.

Ha ganado varios premios, incluido el Primer Premio de Interpretación en el Concurso Franz Liszt (1999, Budapest).  Como solista, su último CD fue The Well-Tempered Pianist de Francis Routh: unos de estos preludios pueden escucharse en la página web del compositor.

Tiene muchos conciertos como solista en Gran Bretaña y España. Estrena obras contemporáneas en las que destacan los compositores:  Rob Jones y Andrew Glover-Whitley.  Ha tocado también en varios grupos de cámara y en dúos con violín, violonchelo, flauta, flauta de pico y soprano.

En 2006 las editions Schott publicó una recopilación de sus obras para flauta y piano.

Charles Matthews ha tocado para la Royal Opera y Royal Ballet en Londrés, y ha grabado obras para espectáculos en varios teatros de España.

Es organista de la Iglesia de Santa Caterina en Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire; también contribuye a los conciertos del grupo 'Spire' (órgano y música electrónica).  Trabaja mucho con jóvenes: es profesor de piano de King's High School, Warwick, profesor de órgano y pianista acompañante del Conservatorio de Birmingham; además trabaja cada julio como profesor de música de cámara y director de orquesta en el Curso Internacional de Música Matisse (San Lorenzo de El Escorial, España).  Dentro de este mismo curso dirije el conjunto 'Postante'.

Charles Matthews está casado; tiene un hijo y dos hijas.

Born in 1966, Charles Matthews studied at the Royal College of Music, London, and was an organ scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge.  His teachers have included Beryl Tichbon, Gwilym Isaac, David Pettit, Patricia Carroll, Nicholas Danby, Charles Spinks and Dr Richard Marlow.

Charles has won numerous awards, perhaps most notably first prize in the 1999 Franz Liszt Organ Interpretation Competition in Budapest.  His most recent solo recording is of Francis Routh's cycle The Well-Tempered Pianist; some tracks from this CD can be heard free of charge at the composer's website.

Recent engagements include solo performances in the UK and Spain, as well as duo recitals with flute, recorder, violin, 'cello and voice.  Performances in recent months include premières of new works by Susan Howley, Rob Jones and Andrew Glover-Whitley.

A collection of Charles's compositions for flute and piano was published in 2006 by Schott.

Charles has performed for productions by the Royal Opera and Royal Ballet, and recorded music used in various theatres in Spain.
Charles is organist of St Catharine's Church, Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, and also contributes to the Spire organ and electronics project.  He works extensively with young people, teaches piano at King's High School, Warwick, acts as piano accompanist and organ tutor at the Birmingham Conservatoire, and works as conductor and contemporary music coach for the annual Curso Internacional Matisse at San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain, where he runs the Ensemble Postante.

Charles is married with three children.
